Images from Saddam Hussein’s summer house in Kurdistan on top of Gara Mountain. The place is spectacularly placed on a peak in the ridge line overlooking the Amedi valley and is still surrounded by mine fields. Below the house is a tunnel that at some point contained or was meant to be a gun position well hidden from air strikes.

A few images from Mount Sinjar and Sinuni. The area is inhabited by Yazidis and was taken by Daesh in August 2014 with the main city of Shingal only liberated in November 2015. Tens of thousands in not several hundred thousands of Yazidis fled from Daesh and the ones that didn’t were mostly killed or sold into slavery. From 149,000 people the area now houses less than 20,000 and empty and destroyed villages are scattered in the landscape. At the time of writing fighting is still ongoing in the area south of the mountain.
